Social media has changed the way we communicate and do business. Has it not? However, when you hear someone use the term “social media,” does your brain freeze? Do your eyes turn into saucers, like a deer looking into the headlights of a car? If you’re over 50, I may be addressing you. Today’s business owner finds time and again that to grow their business they MUST “get with the times.” If they don’t want their business to fail, they MUST find out where their audience is and BE THERE.
Using Social Media to Network
There are so many social media platforms to choose from. And if you don’t understand how to work inside a particular platform, you won’t be able to utilize it to grow your business. But, it’s essential to understand how to use social media for social networking.
So, first, what exactly is social networking?
Meeting and getting to know people by connecting with them on social media is the “social” part of social networking. Communicating with those people you meet and know is the “networking” part.
Lifewire.com compared social networking to “starting a new school.” They said it like this, “At first you don’t have any friends, but as you join groups and begin meeting new people, you build a friend list of those with similar interests.”
You Need to be Social Networking
Social networking is not only entertaining but a great way to connect with others worldwide. It is one of the best tools for meeting and connecting with people who need to hear your story and what services your business offers them.
Social media platforms are very effective for promoting your business, staying connected with current customers, providing great customer service, and building relationships.
And there’s no better way to get the most for your marketing dollar than to write and publish blog posts and then promote them on social media platforms. Social networking drives traffic back to your website. It should be an integral part of your marketing plan.
What’s most important is that no matter which network you’re using, you’re telling stories rather than selling!
Which Social Media Site is Right for You?
Every business owner should be social networking because it’s great for business! But which social media platform is right for your business?
There are plenty of social media sites to choose from. But the one(s) right for your business is the one(s) your audience is on. And remember…just because you have a favorite, it doesn’t mean that it’s your audience’s favorite!
LinkedIn is good for business to business, but not as much for business to customer. Businesses in search of people to fill a position use LinkedIn like they are reading through resumes. It’s also a great way to make business connections. Right now, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn are the most popular sites for business – but that changes! Find out which social media platform your audience currently spends most of their time and be there, for starters. You can always add more as you master one at a time. And, be prepared to change as preferences change.
Once you’ve decided which social media platform your audience uses the most, focus on utilizing that medium for social networking well before moving on to your second choice and so on.
